Black Berkey and Ceramic filters for Berkey Units
Black Berkey®
Purification Elements in - 9" length
Black
Berkey® Purification Elements are more powerful than any other gravity
filter element currently available. In fact, Berkey has tested the Black Berkey®
purification elements with more than 10,000 times the concentration of pathogens
per liter than is required by standard test protocol. This concentration of
pathogens is so great that the post filtered water should be expected to contain
100,000 or more pathogens per liter (99.99% reduction - the requirement for
pathogenic removal). Incredibly during the test the purification elements removed 100%.
Absolutely no pathogens were cultured from the effluent or were able to be
detected, even under an electron microscope, setting a new standard in water
purification.
The Big Berkey® black
Berkey Purification Elements removes water filter system
removes greater than 99.999% of viruses and greater than 99.9999% of pathogenic
bacteria, while also removing or dramatically reducing protozoa, trihalomethanes,
inorganic minerals, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, VOCs, petroleum
products, perfluorinated chemicals, rust, silt, sediment and even radiologicals.
The system is so powerful it can remove food coloring or tea tannin from water
without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Virtually no other
system can duplicate this performance.
Black Berkey® purification elements are so powerful, they
can remove red food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals
your body needs. Virtually no other filtration element can duplicate this
performance.
Because Black Berkey® purification elements fit many other manufacturers gravity filters,
your existing gravity filtration systems can be upgraded. This vastly improves their
ability to remove unwanted contaminates.
The Sterasyl™ grade ceramic is
designed to remove suspended solids and pathogenic bacteria (>99.99%). The
filter elements are produced using the latest ceramic techniques to provide a
hollow porous ceramic, which is fired at a temperature in excess of 1,000º C.
They are designed to operate with water flow going from the outside to the
inside of the element. The ceramic shell exhibits a strictly controlled pore
structure, so as to provide efficient sub-micron filtration, a proven defense
against hard-shelled parasites such as Cryptosporidium as well as pathogenic
bacteria. The ceramic also removes other less harmful, but equally unpleasant
particulate debris such as rust and dirt.
Composition of the
Sterasyl™ ceramic contains pure silver. This silver is a material designed to
significantly inhibit bacteriological mitosis or grow through. The result is
that bacterial growth is inhibited from occurring within the Sterasyl™ ceramic
element (which is not possible with the other ceramic filter elements). This silver
content insures that filtered water contains levels well below those required by
international standards. Because of the silver, Sterasyl™ filter elements do
not require sterilization after cleaning.
The Sterasyl™ filter,
when used in in-line housings, is certified by the National Sanitation
Foundation (NSF) as meeting their Standard No 42 for materials.
Super
Sterasyl™ Ceramic
Water Filter Elements - 7" and 9" lengths
Additional to the Sterasyl™
grade ceramic filter the bore of the
Sterasyl™ grade ceramic shell is
filled with granular activated carbon, which enables the filter to reduce
chlorine and organic chemicals while improving the color, taste, and odor of the
source water.
Toxicological extraction is
commonly the most difficult area of the NSF testing standards to satisfy. This
shows that the filter does not re-contaminate the water. Many other ceramics
have not passed and may not be capable of passing the NSF material extraction
test. The Ceramic shell of our Super Sterasyl˙ element is an NSF Listed
Component and is manufactured to meet NSF standard 42 for materials.
Super Sterasyl™ Candle Water Filter Element
This cleanable filter element is designed to reduce suspended solids, pathogenic
bacteria, organic chemicals, and improve taste and odor. The filter elements are
produced using the latest ceramic techniques to provide a hollow porous ceramic
which is fired at a temperature in excess of 1000C. They are designed to operate
with water flow going from the outside to inside of the element. The ceramic
shell exhibits a strictly controlled pore structure, so as to provide efficient
sub-micron filtration, a proven defense against hard shelled parasites such as
Cryptosporidium, as well as removing other less harmful, but equally unpleasant
particulate debris, such as rust and dirt. The bore of the filter candle
contains granular activated carbon that aids in the reduction of chlorine,
reduces organic chemicals and improves the color, taste, and odor of the source
water. The Sterasyl™ element has a unique domed ceiling assuring that leakage
cannot occur as may happen with capped filters.

Bacterial mitosis and
'grow-through'
Mitosis is the name for the usual method of bacterial cell division. This
division is characterized by resolving the chromatin of the cell nucleus into a
threadlike form that condenses into chromosomes, each of which separates
longitudinally into two parts, one part of each chromosome being retained in
each of the two new daughter cells.
When conditions of growth (cell division) are right (proper environmental
conditions, temperature, pressure, etc.) and sufficient nutrients, the
'threadlike forms' can penetrate the ceramic structure of other ceramic shells
and create bacterial cells on the inside of the element.
Sterasyl™ grade filter elements incorporate
pure silver into the porous ceramic shell to inhibit the occurrence of
'grow-through'
Inhibiting Mitosis
The Super Sterasyl™
ceramic filter is designed to trap bacteria mainly on the outer surface of the
ceramic element preventing them from passing through into the drinking water.
Given favorable
temperature and pressure conditions, the accumulated bacteria could proliferate
and grow unless prevented by some means. To inhibit this our elements are
manufactured with a small amount of silver in the ceramic shell. Silver is a
recognized bactericide, so when the bacteria comes into contact with the silver
impregnated ceramic, their growth is inhibited.
The silver leach rate
from the ceramic is very low and always well below the national recommended
limits.
