The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (“TSSA”) is an Administrative Authority empowered under the Safety and Consumer Statutes Administration Act, 1996 to administer and enforce the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000 (the “Act”) and its regulations. The Fuels Safety Program of the TSSA regulates the storage, transmission and utilization of hydrocarbon fuels (e.g. propane and natural gas) and includes the installation and maintenance of associated equipment. The Act and appropriate Regulations can be found on our web site at http://www.tssa.org.

The TSSA is concerned that propane and gas-fired Un-Vented Servel Refrigerators built between 1933 and 1957, (“Un-Vented Servel Refrigerators”) are not properly installed, operated or maintained. These conditions may result in a carbon monoxide (CO) safety hazard in the living space causing injury up to and including death.

CO is a colourless gas produced when fuels such as natural gas and propane burn incompletely. CO itself is odourless and tasteless but may be accompanied by an abnormal odour of incomplete fuel combustion. Symptoms of CO poisoning include nausea and vomiting, dizziness, burning eyes, difficulty breathing, confusion and loss of consciousness.

Effective April 1, 2006, the TSSA is requiring that all Propane and Gas-Fired Un-Vented Servel Refrigerators be:

• Removed and safely rendered inoperable for any future use; or • Removed and relocated to an area isolated from the living space.

The TSSA also requires that all Un-Vented Servel Refrigerators shall be inspected and serviced by a TSSA certified gas technician annually.

In addition, all Un-Vented Servel Refrigerators now require a “WARNING” label affixed to the front door of the refrigerator or inside the refrigerator in a location that is readily visible.

This refrigerator is prone to the production of Carbon Monoxide in levels that may be lethal. This refrigerator may only be operated in an area that is isolated from a living space such as: a remote shed, garage or open porch. The refrigerator shall be located a minimum distance of 12 inches from any opening to the living space.

The word “WARNING” shall be a minimum of ¼-inch (6.4 mm) in height. All other words on the label shall be a minimum 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) in height.

The Un-Vented Servel Refrigerators in question are different from those being currently produced by Dometic Corporation under the brand name of Servel. The attached visuals are intended to be used to identify the refrigerators of concern. Attention should be paid to the style of the refrigerator and one of the two “Servel” logos.
