Myth: Don’t store your battery directory on concrete
Background: When batteries
grew in size and when they had to become more durable they moved out of glass
jars into tarred wooden boxes. Of course these batteries would eventually seep
acid and leak. The leaked acid could and did short between batteries and cells
as the battery acid pooled underneath. Raising the battery from the floor
stopped most electrical shorts.
Why the myth doesn’t
disappear: Batteries self discharge over time so they will discharge over
time. Also, and just as important because many batteries are not fully charged
before stored the sulfate coating the battery plates organizes into crystals
insulating the battery plates from the sulfuric acid. Two identical batteries,
one on a shelf or board, the other on a concrete floor will have the same
characteristics during storage
